Nanton RCMP have arrested a local woman, charging her with drug trafficking.

The arrest was made last Friday, March 4 during a raid on the woman's home.

Nanton RCMP Constable Rob Demers says they found a variety of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

"Just under two ounces of powder cocaine. Street value is probably worth around $1500. A small amount of marijuana and various other devices leading us to believe this is a trafficking charge."

He says it's an investigation that's been in the works for a while.

"We've been working on it for the last few months and through our inteligence and through our surveillance, we formed enough grounds to convince the judge to grant us a search warrant which was executed last Friday afternoon."

Demers says at just a couple of ounces of cocaine, it doesn't sound like much, but it is when you put it into perspective.

"This is a small community. We had reason to believe this person was only dealing to people in Nanton. So obviously the drugs that we seize in Nanton, as opposed to somewhere like Calgary is going to be significantly different. But, for a little place like Nanton, just under two ounces is quite a bit of cocaine and we're very happy with the seizure."

Demers says the arrest and charges are the end result of an ongoing investigation.

The woman will make her first court appearance in Fort MacLeod Provincial Court April 6.
