Motorists in Okotoks may still be adjusting to the new 40 km/h speed limits.

The particular signs facing concerns may be those stating the speed limit within the town of Okotoks is 40 km/h except where otherwise posted.

Tim Stobbs, municipal enforcement manager, offers clarity for those who might be confused regarding the signage layout when entering town limits.

"You'll see the sign warning about the 40 km/h and a short distance from it you'll see a 60 km/h sign, that would be the otherwise posted," he says. "The converse applies when you drive off of either Northridge or Southridge Dr. or one of the main arteries, when you turn off the street you'll see a sign that says 40 advising you return to a 40 km/h speed."

Only the arterial routes are 50 or 60 km/h and as soon as a residential district is entered it's a 40 km/h zone.

Stobbs says there's also been confusion around the new speed limit and school zones.

"A school zone sign of course is going to be your primary sign to be concerned about on a school day as it goes from 7:30 in the morning until five at night, but also we have to put a sign just past it or before it advising that the speed limit is 40 for the hours or the days when school is not actually place taking place."

Stobbs adds as the town moves forward with this new speed limit, some changes could take place with the placement of the signs.
