RCMP Cars 3

Claresholm RCMP are investigating after receiving a complaint about a couple suspected of pretending to be Fort McMurray evacuees.

Family and Community Support Services in Claresholm called the RCMP after becoming suspicious of the couple.

The investigation found neither had ever lived in Fort McMurray, or even had ties to Alberta.

Police say the pair simply took advantage of the people of the community, who thought they were helping people who lost their home in the wildfires.

Claresholm residents gave the pair a place to stay, clothes, meals and even bought a pair of work boots.

Mounties want to speak with other possible victims and could lay more charges.

45 year old Darryl Lincoln Joseph Rondeau of Victoria, B.C., is facing one count of fraud under $5,000.

He made his first court appearance May 16, and is being held in custody as he has other matters before the courts.

He'll make his second appearance June 1.

No charges have been laid against the second person yet.
