High River's Citizens On Patrol is still in the process of getting back up and running.

Constable Stacy Campbell says they are still working on getting their society status reinstated.

"We've just been trying to get that re-done and it's taken longer than we expected, but I think we have close to 30 people signed up for the program already, so once we get going I have people that are just chomping at the bit, and it could really help us with some extra eyes and ears out there," she says.

Cst. Campbell says it's more than driving around late at night keeping eye on the community

Members of the group will also be helping out with community events and could do things like traffic counts in areas where there have been problems reported.

She says they can be a real deterrent to criminals.

"It's great when they see things happening and give us a call, but once the criminals know that there's someone out there watching at different times of the day and it's not a set time when they're going to be out there they'll think twice about going out there, because someone may be watching," Cst. Campbell says.

She's been pleasantly surprised that the median age of people stepping forward, in their 40's and 50's, has been younger than she thought it would be .

Anyone who's interested in getting involved can stop by the High River RCMP detachment.
