The time change means it might also be time to check out any smoke and CO detectors in the house.

Fire Prevention Officer Clayton Rutberg with the High River Fire Department says it's a good idea to check them twice a year in the spring and fall.

"Check on it, if it's got a battery make sure the battery gets changed out and also make sure it's no older than ten years old and still functioning," he says. "Typically they'll have a date on them somewhere, and when it doubt it's a good idea to replace them anyway."

Rutberg  says if it is older than ten years, check with the manufacturer to see how to properly dispose of them.
