The Town of Nanton has spent over half a million dollars on vital repairs to the Tom Hornecker Arena and Recreation Centre over the past year.

But it needs more.

Nanton Mayor Jennifer Handley says, such is the case with a building that was brand new back in the late 1970's.

"There's some major needs there. This is a well over 40 year old facility and items need repair or fixing or replacing."

Handley says they hired consultants to give them a detailed report about what needs to be done, but still asked the obvious question first.

"Of course we asked "what if we just built a new facility?" You know is it cheaper to just start over. And the average Rec-Facility similar to what we have is probably, $25 million."

Handley says that kind of money is out of the question, and well above the Town's debt tolerance, meaning they'll have to pick and choose what they can repair and upgrade as they go.
