The Province is changing some of their practices when it comes to teaching math.

Calculators in exams will take a hit in grade 6 and grade 9 math classes, while "showing your work" in grade 12 diploma exams will be back in, after being cut by the previous PC government in 2010 as a cost saving measure.

Education Minister David Eggen, says money will also be set aside for teachers looking to upgrade their skills.

"We will be working with Advanced Education to introduce a bursary program that will allow current and pre-service teachers to access up to $2,000 to help cover the costs of post secondary courses."

The program is designed to strengthen teachers knowledge, skill and confidence in teaching math.

Details of the program are being finalized but, Alberta Education will allocate at least $2 million toward these actions through its existing budget.

Eggen says Alberta students are among the best in world in science and reading, but math skills have dropped off, with these changes, coming in 2018, aimed at bringing them back up.
