Students at Senator Riley Middle School are jetting off to Quebec to brush up on their French skills.

For 60 to 75 per cent of the trip, the 44 students, nine chaperones and two teachers will be completely immersed in the language.

Chaperone Rebecca Hastings said it will be a great learning opportunity, even just learning the basics like where's the bathroom and ordering food.

"At lunch time they are given money and with their chaperone they have to go out and find lunch,"  said Hastings.
"That in itself is going to be a fun experience for those kids."

The group left early Thursday, February 9, and will do a ghost tour of old Montreal Friday.

The following day they do a guided tour of Montreal, including a stop at Notre-Dame Basilica before heading to Quebec City.

'We are doing Carnival for two nights that will be a big highlight for the kids."

The Quebec Winter Carnival has been held on and off since 1894.

They will also be going to Village Valcartier where one of the activities includes sliding down a mountain in a raft with eight to 10 people inside.

"That will be an interesting day for us," Hastings said.

Students did some fundraising to help with the costs of the trip.
