High River council has given the OK to a capital budget for 2017 of about $2.2-million.

Deputy Mayor Cathy Couey says when the renewal budget is included it balloons up to over $36-million.

She says they're looking at things like an aquatic centre, water treatment plant upgrade and wastewater treatment plant in the future.

"There are some pretty major projects that we are facing in the next number of years that we'll have to do some really good planning for, so you do look at some of those large numbers facing us in the future," Couey says. "We are looking as some key repairs and maintenance at the Bob Snodgrass Recreational facility, aquatics, the large arena, there's some spray park upgrades, obviously the Centre Street bridge, we hope to do some reporting on the life of that."

She says as always there's some fleet improvements and studies on water and wastewater projects.

About $750,000 will be spent this year on the pool and the large and small ice surfaces and the curling club at the rec-plex.

Through the provincial government's Long Term Recovery Support Program and the 2016 Mitigation Program grants the Town will have about $34-million available for this year's capital budget. The cost of the southwest berm, if it gets the go ahead, is pegged at $21-million.
