Black Diamond residents will see a Canada Day fireworks display once again this year

Canada Day is arriving quickly, and towns across the Foothills are planning their festivities for the annual celebration.

Black Diamond's Canada Day event will be special this year, as it will be the first time since 2012 that the Town will be celebrating July 1 with a fireworks display.

Mayor Sharlene Brown says thanks to the 2013 floods and a water restriction in 2014, the Town hasn't been able to enjoy the fireworks in quite some time.

"We haven't had those opportunities to have the big fireworks celebration," Brown says. "Although we've had the Canada Day celebrations, we haven't had the nighttime show. So, it's really exciting to be able to see that this is going to be happening again. On July 1 just at dusk behind the RONA, there will go the pop, bang, boom, and the fireworks will go again."

Along with the fireworks, a number of other activities are planned for the day on Centre Avenue including face painting, a native drumming group, as well as a full lineup of bands.

Brown says the annual celebrations are always a huge event that draw in people from across Southern Alberta.

"During the daytime we will have, typically the music festival that goes on, and then we would have the opportunity to have the fireworks," she says. "This year July 1 is on a Wednesday, so it's mid-week, it's a great time for day-trippers to come out of Calgary, it's a great time to explore the region, and come get 'Diamond-ized.'"

As the town looks to build on their tourism efforts in the past, Brown says that the Canada Day celebrations are a great way to showcase the town to visitors.

Brown adds if you are looking for the best seat in the house, there is only one spot that comes to mind.

"Right in behind the RONA, there is no other place," she says. "You have the cars all lined up, the earlier you get there the better, bring your bug spray because sometimes there are a few mosquitoes. But, blankets, bug spray, and you are away to go right behind the RONA, and that's where you are going to be able to see the best view of them."
