The Town of High River has put out the call for members for a newly established committee.

Kara Rusk with Legislative Services says they're looking for people to sit on the Community Vitality Fund Advisory Committee.

She says they make recommendations to council on funding requests from residents.

"These funds are used to support the community, community based projects and community led initiatives, whether it's a specific improvement project or events in the community," Rusk says.

Rusk says after completion of the 2017 budget, it's expected the fund will have $60,000 to hand out.

"There's two bases of funding," she says. "There's the under $2,000 which the committee has been granted the authority to right away approve certain projects, but anything over $2,000 the committee with make recommendations to council and council would ultimately make the final decision."

In the past Mayor Craig Snodgrass has said it can be very intimidating for someone to appear in front of council and the establishment of this committee should help. Now individuals and groups would appear before the committee of other town residents to make their case and either make the decisions themselves or send it to town council.

Rusk says anyone interested can go to the town's website and find an application under the Board and Committees tab and submit it to the Town Office for consideration. Council will decide on the recommendations in January.
