It's the season for local councils to begin their budget deliberations.

Foothills MD Mayor Larry Spilak says they're just getting underway and the recent provincial announcement on education property taxes will really help.

"We started to review it (the budget) last week, it looks like this certainly is helping us a great deal as far as getting back on track again," Spilak says.

He says although it's early on, it looks like they'll be able to keep any increases to a minimum.

"It looks very promising, as always our council has been very diligent when it comes to increasing taxes, we do it as little as possible," he says. "We were concerned this year because of the education tax but it looks as though we're going to be able to come in much, much lower than our neighbours to the north and south."

The education tax reimbursement is worth close to a million dollars.
