Foothills MP John Barlow is joining the growing chorus of Canadians opposed to the new ban on a long list of weapons by the Trudeau Liberals.

Barlow says the move, which was achieved through an order in council, which meant no debate or vote, will do nothing to stem gun violence in Canada.

"The fact they're being so misleading to Canadians saying, you know, by doing this we are preventing any future gun violence or violent crime. Nothing that was announced in this gun ban would have stopped or prevented what happened in Nova Scotia."

Barlow says while the shooting was a national tragedy, this move in no way would have stopped it from happening.

He says with the announced "buy back" program, taxpayers will be on the hook for something he says has no bearing on stopping crime.

"They want to spend one or two billion dollars on the government buying firearms from legal, law abiding firearms owners who have never broken any laws. I think the resources should be spent on giving the border security services the resources they need to crack down on illegal smuggling, to crack down on gang crime. As a taxpayer, that's where I would prefer my dollars to go."

Barlow says he's been hearing from constituents who aren't gun owners or hunters who disagree with the legislation.
