The Conservatives are already declaring the federal budget a failure on many fronts.

Foothills M-P John Barlow says there were a couple of notable omissions.

"There's absolutely nothing for the ag sector, the agri-business sector one of the largest employers in Alberta, no discussion whatsoever for natural resources and our energy sector, again one of the largest employers in Alberta. To see these two industries absolutely ignored is frustrating and is not good news for Albertans," he says.

Barlow says he's happy to see an extension for employment insurance but says there's nothing to create jobs.

He says the Liberals promised in the election to decrease the small business tax but have increased them by $300 million and he says if you want to grow the economy and create jobs you have to give businesses the opportunity to invest in their own company.

The budget also did not contain any information on health transfers to the provinces.

"I don't understand the priorities that this government is setting, we made record setting commitments to transfer payments to provinces, specifically for health and education funding, those were not mentioned in this budget and then today of all days, when we have another devastating terrorist attack unfortunately in Brussels, certainly all Canadians, our hearts go out to those families in Belgium, but today to announce a $3.7 billion cut to the defence budget is also very disconcerting," Barlow says.

As for the Employment Insurance changes, long tenured employees will be eligible for an additional 20 weeks of benefits but only in some certain part of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland.

Barlow says it's unfair to pit one part of the province against another or one part of the country against another.
