(L to R) Mekhi and Sumner Bailey were at Monday's Council meeting helping to advocate for backyard bees and chickens.

Chickens and bees could be landing in one of your neighbour's yards in the near future.

The idea was brought forward to High River Council at its regular meeting on Mon. June 22.

Okotoks resident and member of the Canadian Liberated Urban Chicken Klub (CLUCK), was at the meeting to show her support.

She was a big part in the process when Okotoks Town Council approved its urban hen pilot project back in March of 2015.

"Now everyone is in the process of building their coop and run," she says. "Those will have to get inspected and approved, and then they can get chickens. So I think there are about three families who have chickens and hens already."

She says she hopes High River Council will also get on board with the ideas of backyard chickens, as well as backyard bees.

She says chickens and bees can be great educational tools for families with children.

"Kids learn that what you put in your backyard affects the honey you it. It affects the bees and how long you live," she says. "(They'll also learn) how to take care of chickens, so I think it's a fantastic and critical-learning experience."

The Town of High River is now taking steps to get public feedback on the idea before a motion will be brought up at a future Council meeting.
