Parks Canada is pleased to announce 10 bison calves have been born in Banff's backcountry.

They have been working on this project to integrate bison back into the ecosystem.

Old bones and skulls through out the park show bison used to be a natural species in the Banff area.

Karsten Heuer with Parks Canada, says the herd of 26 bison is one of three in North America exposed to natural predators.

"Bison are pretty new to all these animals; the smells and the sight. There is certainly not any interest on behalf of the predators at this stage."

The bison are in an enclosed pasture, so the animals can establish their new home.

Early this summer, the small herd will be released to a larger summer pasture where they will have more space to forage.
