Looking to escape the heat and the crowds at the Calgary Stampede grounds this weekend?

Step back in time, by going to the furthest corner in the Western Showcase. Located in the Roundup Centre, past the wine bar and behind the artists booths is where you will find the Creative Arts and Crafts Competition and with an old fashion town fair.

Volunteer Jennifer Scott says, they had over 400 entries this year in the competition and it has many categories.

"There are categories to do with rug hooking, weaving, quilting, needlework, sewing, knitting and crocheting," said Scott, to name just a few.

Every year they have a theme contest and this year it is all about the the Maple Leaf as they continue to celebrate Canada's 150.

Anything with a Maple Leaf in the design that fits in the categories required can be entered and the winner is based on votes from the public who pass through the display and the peice with the most votes wins a cash prize.

So far, they have received some very creative entries.

"We have a little bit of everything. We have some quilted items, paper art, water colour and an knitted afghan in the shape of a maple leaf.

Every year they also ask artisans to support local charities and non-profits.

This year the group named Rowan House as their 2017 charity and asked artisans to donate new, useful handcrafted stitches for adults and children such as quilts, afghans, sweaters or household items.

The items may be displayed, but are not judged and are not charged an entry fee.
