A fundraiser aimed at raising money-and awareness-for a rare neurological disease is set for Saturday in Okotoks.

"Angels in the Park" returns for the first time since 2012, in support of the Canadian Angelman Syndrome Society.

Organizer Kristal Martin says it's not a well-known disease, but it hits particularly close to home for her.

"Angelman Syndrome is a rare neuro-genetic disorder," she says. "So, my five year-old (son Dawson) has Angelman Syndrome, and he's missing a piece of DNA on one of his chromosomes, so (the symptoms are) lack of speech, developmental delays, seizures, those kinds of things."

Martin says the event offers activities for people of all ages.

"We've got some bands coming out, weather permitting, so I'm hoping everything stays nice and sunny," she says. "We have a couple of the bouncy-houses coming out, we have food being prepared for us by Highwood Catering, and we have a bunch of other families that also have kids with Angelman Syndrome joining us for the day."

There will also be loonie/toonie games, a bake sale, and silent auction, with all the proceeds going to the CASS.

Martin says aside from the money raised, as with any fundraising event, it's about raising awareness.

"I just want people to know about (Angelman Syndrome) and not hesitate to ask," she says. "Judging is something I've come across in the pass, and I just want everyone to know that Dawson is in our community, and he's loving and fun to be around."

The Angels in the Park fundraiser goes from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Okotoks Curling Club.
