The Town of High River says there's a blue/green algae outbreak at Emerson Lake which is very dangerous for people and pets.

The algae is a result of warm temperatures and a lack of rain, but the Town says it's important to keep pets away from going into the water or drinking it as it's highly toxic and can make pets very sick or die.

They also warn people to stay out of the water as it can be dangerous, particularly to children.

For those taking fish out of the lake, fillets are safe to eat, but whole fish can be dangerous.

The algae should subside naturally with cooler temperatures and rain.

The Town says they will continue to monitor the lake.

The Province's MyHealth.Alberta.ca has more information on blue/green algae and any potential symptoms from contamination.
