Alberta truckers transporting goods across the Canada/US border will have easier access to vaccines thanks to an agreement between Alberta and Montana.

Starting on Monday, May 10th, surplus vaccine doses will be available to truck drivers at a rest stop near Conrad, Montana.

Specifically, the Janssen vaccine from Johnson & Johnson will be provided, and drivers won't have to book ahead to get their dose.

Premier Jason Kenney says truckers have played a vital role in the pandemic, and continue to do so.

"Truck drivers have worked hard throughout the pandemic to keep the supply chain open and deliver the essential goods that Albertans need. That's why Alberta's taking further measures to protect the health and safety of these workers."

Peter Hampton, Vice President at CDI International Inc, a trucking company based in Aldersyde, says it's great to have that sort of recognition.

"I think it's good that someone's actually looking out for the truck drivers. They have not stopped, nothing for us has changed really. They've got to keep going and they put up with a lot of B.S. out on the road and it's good that someone's looking out for them."

The agreement will make doses available to around 2000 Alberta truckers.

Around 800 truck drivers cross the border at the Coutts Border Crossing every day.

They'll have access to vaccines through the program until May 23rd.
