The Alberta Prosperity Fund is a political action committee with the goal of uniting Alberta's conservative parties. The group came to High River on March 22 on a listening tour to hear what route people want to take.

Spokesman Dave Rutherford says the group doesn't care how it happens, they just want one conservative voice.

"What we're trying to do is basically unite what we're calling the "common sense" vote. We've got the Wildrose and the PCs representing two conservative entities and we, as a mission, want one. We don't care how it happens. We don't care if they merge. We don't care if one takes over the other or whatever it might be."

He says the plan is to stop vote-splitting.

"From the meetings we've had so far, people are so mad they just want this, what they would describe as a "mess", fixed. Why do we have two parties? We need one. Because the vote splitting is resulting in an NDP win. So what do we do? That's sort of what we're doing. We're going to go out there and sign people up and have people buy memberships in our group."

Rutherford says the Alberta Prosperity Fund hopes to get response from enough people to become a movement that will force the Wildrose and PC parties to work together. He says these parties both uphold conservative values and would serve Albertans best with one voice.

"I guess you could say the values of both parties, they're very similar. I mean, we all were PCs at one time. I think we all know the values Albertans have in their gut, I think we know who we are. We just need to have the executives or the leadership of these parties put Alberta ahead of their own egos if that's possible, and form one voice."

Rutherford says the group wants to hear people's ideas as to whether the two parties should merge, if one should take over the other, or if a whole new party should be created.
