Alberta's provincial government has announced some new steps to support businesses participating in the Restrictions Exemption Program.

Jason Kenney was joined by Jobs, Economy, and Innovation minister Doug Schweitzer for the announcement this evening (Oct. 7).

Firstly, a one-time payment of $2,000 is being made available for small and medium-sized Alberta businesses who have implemented the R.E.P., meant to offset any costs associated with it. Businesses are free to use the REP Implementation Grant in any way they see fit.

The fines for contravening public health orders and harassing frontline workers are being increased from $2,000 to $4,000.

They're also working to introduce legislation that would protect businesses from frivolous lawsuits to do with businesses implementing the R.E.P.

Additionally, $1 million is being made available for businesses seeking to train employees on how to deal with and de-escalate heated situations.

Here's a breakdown of the active case count in the area:

- Okotoks: 159 active cases

- High River: 81 active cases

- Foothills County: 96 active cases

- Willow Creek MD: 98 active cases
