The Town of Okotoks will be even more eco-friendly next year as council approved the addition of another disposal program to benefit the environment.

In 2016 all residents will have blue bin recycling and you can add a green compost cart to the number of bins that will be out on the curb.

Blue carts were already on the curbs of residents who chose to have them, but the Town's decided to make all blue carts universal and the incoming green cart as well.

Mayor Bill Robertson says with the green cart added to weekly pick-ups along with blue recycling and the black bin garbage disposal, there will be less waste in landfills and could lead to more money back in your pocket.

"Around 40 percent of household waste is compost, so if the amount of garbage is reduced in a black cart, eventually we'll be able to track if somebody doesn't have garbage to put out for a particular week if they don't put it out, it could be tracked that they only put it out every second week and they could get a rebate," he says.

The entire program cost for the universal blue cart and green cart recycling is estimated to be $25.54 per month, and Robertson says as the recycling program gets better, the rebate initiative for citizens would benefit those that don't need to take their bins to curb as often.

"If they don't put out their garbage cart, then they wouldn't be charged for that period of time and we would move to try and bill those people for the services they use mainly and for the services they don't use."
