Okotoks residents will no longer have to pack into the Foothills Centennial Centre for the Town's annual Remembrance Day ceremony, as Council has approved moving the ceremony to the Pason Centennial Arena.

The arena has the capability to hold up to 3400 people, which is more than double the Centennial Centre's capacity of 1200.

Councillor Carrie Fischer was in strong support of the idea, and made the motion to relocate the ceremony to the Pason this year.

She says there's just not enough room at the Centennial Centre anymore, and residents shouldn't be excluded from the Remembrance Day Ceremony just because there isn't enough space.

"I've noticed it's growing," she says. "It's becoming more difficult for people to attend and find seating there. It's affecting the very young in our community and the very old in our community, and I think it's important we support a community event such as this, and make sure that as many people who want to attend can attend."

The move doesn't come cheap, however, with about $15,000 needed for associated costs of holding the event at the arena.

Fischer says the price tag might be steep in 2015, she's hoping the Town won't have to foot the entire bill in the future.

"It'll be a financial burden for us this year," she says. "I've instructed, as part of my motion, administration to work with the (Okotoks) Legion to start transferring to them. As they grow and take on different fundraising opportunities as part of their mandate, I would hope they'd be open to assuming some of that cost."

Fischer says at the end of the day, it's hard to look at the over-crowding of the Centennial Centre on Remembrance Day as a negative.

"It's a great problem to have, for us to have so many people that want to attend and honour either the remembrance of family members that have served, or to honour the military actions that we've had as a nation over the past several years," she says.
