High River's in need of new, upgraded recreation facilities.

That's according to the Master Recreation Facilities and Programming Report.

Director of Community Services Lisa Reinders says portions of the Bob Snodgrass Recreation Complex are on their last legs.

"We will do repairs and we will do upgrades to keep our pool going, however it will only last... it's life cycled out, it's going to last maybe four, five, maybe six years and then we will be requiring to have a new pool," Reinders says. "So when you're looking at what a new pool costs generally the recommendation is that you start with a new facility."

The pool closed in April and will remain closed until early July for some important maintenance work to be completed.

McElhanney consultants have pegged the price tag for a new building, with a leisure pool, twin arenas, library and community space, at $50-million.

Reinders says estimates for a building like this are dependent on the economy and when construction actually starts.

She says they'll look at doing a feasibility study of what a new facility will look like and what it'll cost as well as timelines but the timeline is actually five to 10 years from now so the cost becomes an unknown.

Parks and Recreation Manager Craig Stanley will come up with priorities and take those to council in the fall when budget deliberations begin.
