Nothing to complain about for the Highwood Mustangs from the Cross Country Running Provincials in Edmonton over the weekend.

They finished out of the medals in 17th spot overall, but 17th out of 60 schools is still pretty respectable.

Only six runners took part, Amy Bianchini, Sydney Sicotte and Lola Hall all competed in junior girls.

In senior girls it was Cassidy Read and Jennifer Kowal, while Treyton Niemans represented the junior boys.

Coach Barry Malech says his team did great and he was very proud of them.

“The team was one of the smallest teams in recent history, with only 15 runners this year compared to our usual 20-25 runners.  What we lacked in numbers was made up in quality.  What I was really proud of was that four of the six runners representing the team at Provincials this year were first time participants at this level.  Amy and Sydney returned and were equally strong, running excellent times on a course that was one of the fastest we have seen in years, perfect conditions and relatively flat.”

“I was so proud of one of our senior runners, Cassidy Read for running all four years at Highwood, and in her last year, earning the right to compete at Provincials. As a coach, I love to see athletes dig deep and show true grit to reach the next level, and Cassidy was able to do that this in her last year representing Highwood.”
