We may be chubbier than our Calgary neighbours.

Statistics Canada says cities with over 100,000 people have a 24 percent rate of obesity, while towns between 10,000 and 100,000, like High river and Okotoks, have a 30 percent rate.

The 2004 study also found cities over two million like Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal have the lowest rates of obesity, at only 17 percent.

Charity Alcocer with the Calgary Health Region says she can only guess why that is.

"It could relate to levels of activity.  People in rural areas may have less access to centres or facilities offering organized activities.  Often people in the rural areas rely more often on a car for transportation."

She says Health Canada recommends getting at least thirty to sixty minutes a day of physical activity.
