Andrew Scheer says he's stepping down as the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.

Scheer, who took over the party in 2017, steps down after what many are calling a disappointing result in October's election.

Foothills MP, John Barlow, says Scheer's resignation took him by surprise.

"Surprised, none of us I don't think saw this coming and sure is certainly a tough day."

Barlow says he and Scheer had grown close since John first won his seat back in 2015.

"You know I've known Andrew and Jill since we've got here and Louise and I have become quite close with them and he's a good person, a good family man and a real honest, genuine person and that's why I've been such a strong supporter of Andrew."

Since the loss there's been no shortage of infighting over his future and that of the party.

Scheer says he'll stay on as Leader until a new one is chosen.
