The Rural Municipalities Association is holding its Spring Convention in Edmonton this week.

President Paul McLauchlin says the government has taken a bold first step forward in preventing municipalities from being left with unpaid tax bills by oil and gas companies.

"It's like Christmas in March for me, it brings me joy."

It brings some certainty to municipalities saying the long game is to make sure the payment of taxes becomes a regulatory requirement.

Representatives of rural municipalities, including Foothills County, will get to hear about everything from renewable energy to the rural vet shortage during the three-day convention.

Premier Danielle Smith will speak to the group Wednesday.
