The last of the big four chuckwagon canvas auctions went Friday in Ponoka.

The Ponoka Stampede auctioned off 34 canvas spots along with two Wildcard Wagons and raised a record amount of money.

They cracked the half-a-million mark with $553,000 brought in on the historic night.  That's an increase of $163,250 over last year's total.

All four of the canvas auctions this season showcase the strength in the economy and the sport too.

The #1 bid was on Evan Magee, for the second consecutive canvas auction, with $29,500 coming from Krycket Consulting.

Locally Dayton Sutherland tied with dad Mark Sutherland for $18,000 with Jason Glass rolling in with $15,000 and Jordie Fike getting $14,000.

The average bid was just over $15,000 with the median bid at $15,750 with the lowest bid coming in at $6,000.

The Ponoka Stampede runs from June 26 to July 2nd with the chuck's first race on June 27.

The first chuckwagon races of the WPCA season get underway in Grande Prairie at the Stompede from May 31 to June 4.
