Parks Canada staff recently helped a struggling bull elk that had fallen through a layer of ice in Banff.

Their efforts were documented by X user @FernieMariam, who posted several videos of the process.

The elk can be seen struggling to cling to the ice surface on a section of the Bow River.

An initial attempt to secure a rope to the flailing animal failed, but the elk can be seen in the next video clinging to the edge of the ice surface, intently watching Parks Canada personnel sawing into the ice.

The rescuers carved a lane into the ince, allowing for the elk to move nearer the river’s edge.

Crews were then able to give the elk a boost out of the icy water, followed by a cheer from the nearby crowd of onlookers.
