Snowfall may be heading our way this weekend.

Southern Alberta is enjoying a warm April but it could possibly change during the start of the weekend as environment Canada says there's a possible snowfall.

The Foothills is expected to see a dramatic change in temperature and Meteorologist for Environment and Climate Change Canada, Kyle Fougere says we have had a dry and warm spring but he adds the low pressure systems were going to take effect at some point this spring.

"It looks like the low pressure systems will come in the form of snow" he says " it's going to start with the rain and later to snow which should take effect on Friday either in the middle of the day or overnight."

The low pressure system will come from British Columbia and Fougere says when unexpected snow comes from nowhere after such a long period of warmth, it can have a long lasting affect inside many communities.

"When there is wet and heavy snow and it can be difficult to shovel and it can even break tree branches."

Though the weather may have been favorable for some, Fougere says March and April are usually the two months that experience the most snowfall during the year and he is surprised that it took this long for the weather to change.

"In March there was only 9.8 millimetres in the High River area compared to an average of 19.5, and so far there's only been 4.8 millimetres in April where we average 27."

Fougere says the last month and a half have been difficult for the province, and due to warm weather, there's an increase in dry areas and warnings of fire conditions.

He also added, it's still too early to confirm any snow activities coming this weekend but Environment Canada is still looking into it.
