The Okotoks Oilers head into their final five games of the AJHL's regular season looking to go into the Gas Drive playoffs on a high note.

Standing in their way this weekend is one of the top teams in the CJHL in the Whitecourt Wolverines Friday night followed by three straight games in what could potentially be their first round opponent in the South Division Quarterfinals in the Calgary Canucks.

Defenceman Drew Weich says it's definitely playoff mode in the Oiler locker room.

"Whitecourt is a good team, the Canucks are a team we could easily play in the first round so all the guys are treating this weekend like a playoff round."

Currently holding down the 3rd seed in the division heading into the weekend, the mix of two points and a regulation loss by Canmore would wrap up third place and guarantee home ice at least for one round of the playoffs.

The veteran D-man says their collision with Whitecourt Friday will be yet another measuring stick game to see where they stand in the league.

"Whitecourt is a really good team and a win against them would really solidify us as being one of those top tier teams that is going to be a force in the playoffs," Weich says. "Again too that Canucks team they're no slouch anymore they've made some big improvements since last season."

The Oilers have had some scoring touch in their last four games scoring 25 goals in their victories over the Calgary Mustangs, Canmore Eagles and the Drumheller Dragons, but welcome a Whitecourt team that has one of the highest goals for ratios in the league.

Weich says it's important that the team doesn't try to go into a run and gun style of game against them.

"Just getting back to what we're good at and that's cycling the puck, playing good defence and just working hard that's really what our team is just a hard working team and if we can do that I think against any team we're going to have success."

The Oilers won their only other match-up with the Wolverines this season back on November 13 4-3.

Game time Friday is 7 p.m. at Pason Centenninal Arena, The Eagle 100.9 will have the broadcast starting with the Pre-game show at 6:45.

The Oilers face the Calgary Canucks at home the following night on Saturday.
