The first true long weekend of the year is underway and that means many will be filling up before they head for whatever their Victoria Day plans take them.

So does that mean the price of fuel is going to go up?

According to Senior Petroleum Analyst at GasBuddy.com Dan McTeague, he says the price jump really hit gas stations last week and the chances are slim that prices will go up or down during the weekend.

"Considering the hike that we saw last week in many places, four to seven cents a litre more or some instances less. I think that's about what we can expect from now until the end of the Victoria Day long weekend but beyond that it's really anyone's guess," he says.

The average price of gas in Okotoks currently sits at around 92.5 cents a litre and McTeague says the latest price forecast after the weekend will stay fairly steady at that price.

"For now I think we can sort look at things here a week or week and half ahead things look good right now and certainly better than last year but we're never out of the woods when it comes gasoline prices especially during the summer when demand is so high . Anything can and does happen in that period of time these things are just not predictable."

McTeague says the price of fuel is down from this point last year due to oil refineries who had a tough time staying operation due to maintenance and other issues that surrounded them haven't occurred yet.

"Refineries have had a really good start on production but the real wildcard here continues to be the US demand picture. Americans are taking back to their vehicles and as a result anyone who has got some extra gasoline to spare, a refinery finds that they've got a lot of buyers so that's always the potential out there that the prices could always go higher."
