A backcountry rescue operation has a new name.

The Kananaskis Country Public Safety Program is now called Kananaskis Mountain Rescue.

In a release on Facebook, the service says while the name has changed, the world-class program remains the same.

They'll continue to provide backcountry rescue services, public education and outreach, and avalanche forecasting and mitigation of avalanche hazards on public highways in K-Country.

Kananaskis Mountain Rescue is one of the busiest mountain rescue teams in the country.

It responds to an average of 380 backcountry incidents per year.

Since 1979 over 15,000 rescues have been completed and countless lives saved.

They were called to assist an injured snowmobiler south of Coleman on Monday, March 13.

A helicopter was used to get the 25-year-old man from Hillcrest out of the area.

He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
