Stats Can says the country saw 61,000 new jobs created in September which sees Canada's unemployment rate drop to 7.1 percent, it's lowest level since 2008.

McLeod M.P. and Minister of State for Finance Ted Menzies says the government can take credit for that because they've stuck to their guns.

The main gains were teachers heading back to work after the summer break, and in the public sector.

The private sector actually shed 15,000 jobs in September.
