There's been some recent excitement on social media regarding one of the historical artifacts in Okotoks.

The cable tool rig, located by the Okotoks Art Gallery, was donated to the town by the Okotoks Petroleum Association (OPA), and there's been some concern over its potential relocation.

Allan Boss was able to speak on behalf of the town to confirm that nothing's set in stone as of yet.

According to Boss, they're merely discussing with the doner potentially relocating the cable tool rig to a better location in light of planned construction for 2022 on North Railway St.

"If there wasn't a better home for it, it would stay where it is. None of us want it to, you know, get moved from here into a field somewhere. That doesn't make any sense."

The foliage overgrowth and chainlink fence surrounding it aren't conducive for easy viewing. If moved, that problem could also potentially be solved.

It's only an investigation at this point as they look into a number of different things involved, including what it would take to move it and where it would be relocated to.

It's not a museum artifact, only a donation to the town who's working closely with the OPA to ensure it's handled with care in any future plans.

"It's a historical artifact. It needs to be respected. It needs to be considered in the development of our community and we want the best for that piece of equipment. And if we can potentially find a better home for it, then we'll look into that possibility."
