The high school rugby season is still about a month away, but for the Highwood Mustangs girls, their season starts Tuesday.

They'll spend the next few weeks at the Legacy Fieldhouse in Aldersyde getting ready for the season.

Coach Bill Young says they've got about 27 players out this year, which is more than usual, and they've also added a couple of new coaches in Pam Sukut who helped the Vulcan County Hawks win a handful of championships over the past 15 years.

She's joined by Keifer Olson who also has a strong background in rugby.

In fact both have experience at the national level, so Young is very optimistic about the upcoming season.

No firm schedule is in place yet, however Young says the lady Mustangs are most likely going to play their first league game Thursday, April 21.

Other important dates on the high school rugby calendar are:

Saturday, April 30: Early Bird Tournament (Strathmore)

Saturday, May 7: Highwood Sevens Tournament (High River)

Saturday May 14: Clearwater Cup Sevens Tournament (Calgary Rugby Union)

Tuesday May 24 to Saturday, May 28: Tier III Zone Playdowns (TBD)
