The Town of High River will soon host several information sessions on the new Solid Waste Bylaw.

Passed in February of this year, the new rules are replacing a bylaw in place since 2008.

These new rules address a few issues around waste collection in town including loose garbage in bins, yard waste in bins, and overflowing garbage bins.

A few issues stemming from overflowing bins were highlighted at the February 26 town council meeting, including loose garbage being blown out of bins and garbage spilling from bins during pickup. Over-full bins have also led to some inconsistencies in service, as overflowing bins are picked up at the discretion of individual operators.

The bylaw also mainly addresses automated garbage collection, as opposed to a mix of manual and automated handling.

Rather than immediately enforcing the new rules, the town will hold a series of open house events to bring locals up to speed on the new bylaw and answer any questions.

The sessions will be held at schools in each quadrant of the town from April 22-25:

  • April 22nd – Joe Clark School - 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
  • April 23rd – Highwood High School - 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
  • April 24th – Notre Dame Collegiate - 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
  • April 25th – Spitzee School - 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

They’re encouraging anyone planning to attend the sessions to think of a few questions relating to waste collection services, including recycling guidelines, street sweeping, and driveway/walkway clearing.
