High River fire crews were called out to deal with a garage fire Thursday morning around 11:20 a.m.

Fire Chief Cody Zebedee says the fire was at a home on Emerson Road Southwest.

"Crews arrived to find a working fire in a single detached garage at the rear of the property," he says. "Crews initiated an aggressive attack on it and were able to keep the spread to just that individual garage, we had no extension to the home or other nearby structures."

Zebedee says the cause is believed to be improper disposal of the smoker's material into a flower planter.

"We just want to remind everybody to use caution when they're smoking, using ashtray and proper methods of disposal is very important," he says. "Flower beds, flower planters with peat moss and those sorts of organic materials allow for a significant fire hazard, especially with warm days like we have and a little bit of wind it'll smolder and eventually catch fire and then spread to nearby buildings."

There's no word on a damage estimate.
