My name is Cassidy Read your Summer Sunshine Events Host!

It was another action-packed weekend! The Sunshine Patrol was travelling all over Alberta from Vulcan to Black Diamond!

It all started with Vulcan Spock Days on Saturday where we were in the parade and able to see all the shining faces of kids running to get candy and smiling at all the various floats that were in the parade. Along with the floats there was lots of spectators showing their Spock pride off with both their hands and ears. The parade community members also took part in a Pancake Breakfast hosted by the Lions Club and sponsored by Market Street as well as The Taste of Vulcan. People were able to test as many as 7 different local vendors and their various products from specialty coffee to poutine.

After enjoying Spock Days we were able to attend the Jumpstart Day in High River at Canadian Tire. This event was crawling with activites-literally! There was a blown-up obstacle course, a fitness challenge course set up by The Hub from High River, a BBQ with hotdogs and hamburgers all with music playing where kids and families taking part in dancing 'lessons'. The High River Fire Department also had a challenge set up for the families to partake in which participants had to haul water, hit a target using a hose then transport the hose back to the firetruck base. It was all smiles and laughs from everyone enjoying the event and the beautiful weather that added to the enjoyment. Throughout the day donations were being accepted for the Jumpstart Program. Canadian Tire owners Ryan and Kirsty and the many volunteers helping ensure the day ran as smoothly as possible were hoping to match the success from last year where High River was able to win the Canada-wide compeition raising over $17,000 for Jumpstart in our community. It was such an amazing event to be part of and to hear from various families on how much the program has influenced their lives. This program is so successful in keeping kids active and raising awareness for communities to keep their youth enaged in physical activity!

Sunday morning was another great event where we were at the Country Food Mart AG Foods in Black Diamond raising awareness for The Grate Groan-Up Spelling Bee coming up on Septembr 29th, 2018. The spelling bee is put on by Literacy for LIfe which is an organization that helps add family and adult literacy programs in the foothills. For the whole month of June Sobeys in High River, Save-On-Foods in Okotoks and the Country Food Mart AG Foods in Black Diamond will be selling paper bees for $2 where all the funds will be going directly to fund programs in the Foothills. Are you a flibbertigibbet person and can't wait to get involved in the fun with this spelling bee? All you have to do is sign up online with a team of 3 adults! Literacy for Life also has a raffle draw right now where for the small price of $10 a ticket you will get the chance to win $3000 in travel giftcards from either WestJet or Air Canada.

A big thanks to our sponsors, Rim to Rim, Hometown Dental, iDental and the Town of Strathmore.
