After shutting down during the height of the pandemic during the Spring, both the High River and Claresholm Food Rescues are back up and running.

Brienne Fredell with Wildrose Community Connections says how they're operating is a bit different though.

"Just to protect ourselves, volunteers and also those that use our service. All you have to do is give us a call or shoot us an email. If you're in need of food assistance, we will contact you and let you know when you can come and pick up an amazing food package."

The operations gather food that would otherwise be thrown out by local grocery stores or restaurants and then offer it for free to help people in need and stop the unnecessary waste of food going to the landfill.

Fredell says they've managed to save tens of thousands of pounds of food so far.

"We hit over 100,000 pounds a couple of months ago. Which is pretty awesome! Unfortunately we couldn't have a party because we had a big party planned with our volunteers. But yeah, that was during COVID. But yup, it's pretty awesome."

she says she expects them to be busier than ever as the pandemic continues, likely into the fall and winter.
