Another big win over their Alberta Division rivals Saturday night as the Okotoks Dawgs knocked off the Medicine Hat Mavericks 3-1.

The Dawgs played a little small ball to get the victory with two runs in the ninth inning and got stellar pitching from Austin Guzzon going seven innings and striking out seven Mavricks while Tyrell King shut the door in the 8th and 9th.

Dawgs Manager Brett Thomas says the team battled hard throughout a well pitched game by the Mavericks.

"The ninth was lead off with a two strike hit, bunted him over and then Brian Sisler had a ten pitch at-bat got a base hit, we scored a run," he says. "Then another basehit with two strikes from Brenden Rose and we were able to break it open a little bit there."

Thomas says those close games that Dawgs were caught short on earlier in the year are going in their favour.

"We told the guys its just a process, you can't put too much stock in the beginning the season and what goes on," he says. "There's just too many variables working against you, these guys are really coming together.

With a small ball win like Saturday's the Dawgs are prepared in those situations but Thomas says that's not how the Dawgs are going to play every night.

"But when it comes late in the game and the game is on the line, we've got to start to do it," he says. "Daniel (Fredrickson) did a phenomenal job in just getting that bunt down and ended up being the go ahead run.

The Dawgs have a couple days off before returning to Seaman Stadium against Moose Jaw on Tuesday Night
