Criminals beware

A province-wide database will help keep tabs on criminals.

The Alberta government has pledged 100 million dollars to share details on serious and organized crime between law enforcement agencies.

Christine Wonko with the Solicitor General and Public Security says it'll help to have police, RCMP, sherriffs, and corrections officers working together.

She says, although it didn't happen in Alberta, the case of Paul Bernardo points to the need for communication.

"This is a classic example of three different police detachments or services basically following the same individual," she says.  "Had those three jurisdictions been able to talk to one another, it would have made the investigation probably go a lot smoother and probably be solved a lot sooner."

They plan to have the detailed database running within five years.
