Black Diamond Town Council met for the first time in the new year on Wednesday, January 6.

A hot topic of discussion was the most recent dump of snow the Foothills and how they can better deal with it the next time it happens.

Black Diamond Mayor Ruth Goodwin says they are always looking to improve the quality of life for their residents and having clean and clear roads as soon as possible is obviously a big priority.

"It's something we talk about twice a year, We budget a certain amount every year, this year the farmer's almanac, national and provincial weather sites have been fairly consistent saying we are going to receive a decent amount moisture this winter and obviously we saw that."

Goodwin says they often use contractors to help clear away the snow when those big snowfalls come while making sure the cost will not be "wasted."

"We try to be very fiscally responsible, especially with snow removal, a lot of times you'll have chinooks come through and what you've cleared of six inches can be mitigated by a chinook that blows through a few days later and can end up costing you $25,000 or $30,000 that Mother Nature can deal with."

The Town will discuss what they can do better into the new year, with Goodwin saying their administrative team is planning to come back and discuss possible altered strategies moving forward.

Goodwin says they are mindful of the fact that these strategies directly affect the residents in town and it's important to ensure they have efficient and effective cleaning.
