On Wednesday at the Calgary Stampede, Federal Ag Minister Lawrence MacAulay announced the government is investing $14 million into Canada's beef industry.

The money will go to the Beef Cattle Research Council and comes from the government through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

Past Chair of the BCRC, Bryan Thiessen, says the funding is part of the $21 million partnership between the council and the government, which will be used for research and innovation.

"Of which $7.5 million is coming from the producers through our beef cattle check-off, the remaining is coming from the federal government. Over the next five years it's going to allow us to research many aspects of beef production from environmental to production, to animal welfare, to forage, to feed grains and so on."

Minister MacAulay says, the funding will work to put money in producer's pockets.

"In the end you have to realize they're the ones that do it, they're the ones that do the work. When you can increase production and cut costs, it does nothing but put more money in the pockets of farmers, and then beyond that you have to open more trade oppurtunities and we're doing that."

The announcement was a part of MacAulay's Growing Canadian Agriculture tour which wraps up on Tuesday, July 17.
