Foothills Auctioneers in Stavley sold just over 1,500 head in their first calf sale of the year on Monday, September 24.

President and Auctioneer at Foothills Auctioneers, Rob Bergevin, says the sale was a week earlier that usual for ranchers wanting to move their calves because of the dry conditions.

He says, they saw about twice as many calves compared to their first calf sale last year.

"Looks to me like live calves are going to move a little bit earlier this year, and I think it has lots to do with some of the dry conditions that we've exprienced, and that results in higher feed costs on hay, so moving the cattle earlier might take a little pressure off the producers of putting the extra feed into the cow herd."

Bergevin says, the calves were selling for a bit higher than anticipated.

"We saw our six weight steers up to 228, our five weight steers up to 245.25 per pound, we saw some little four weight steers bring up to 271 and some three weight steers that brought over $3.00 per pound."

The next calf sale at Foothills Auctioneers is Monday, October 1st at 10:00 am.
