As of April 1, the Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off has increased from $1.00 to $2.50.

The check-off is a mandatory levy collected on cattle sales throughout Canada to fund research and marketing activities on behalf of the entire beef industry.

The increase was deemed necessary by the industry to support the goals laid out in the National Beef Strategy.

The National Beef Strategy is aimed at positioning the Canadian beef industry for greater profitability, and growth in the production of a high-quality beef product.

The four pillars of the strategy are connectivity, productivity, competiveness, and beef demand.

Chair of the Alberta Beef Producers Charlie Christie, says along with the $2.00 provincial service charge, the total check-off is now $4.50.

"When thinking about the check-off dollars, it's important to note that for every dollar invested by our industry, there's a $14.00 return on that investment through research, market development, and promotional initiatives."

He says, this increase was approved by all nine zones at the 2015 Alberta Beef Producer Fall Meetings.

Christie congratulates producers for seeing the value in the increase, and recognizing the importance of staying competitive in the global market.
