Alberta's agriculture sector will receive $406 million over the next five years.

The investment comes from the Federal and Provincial Governments through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, which will be replacing Growing Forward 2 that expires on March 31.

The Federal Agriculture Minister, Lawrence MacAulay, and Provincial Agriculture Minister, Oneil Carlier, were in Calgary earlier this week to make the announcement.

Foothills M.P., John Barlow, says the funding is good news, but farmers need more than money.

"When we have a huge grain backlog, problems with the TPP and NAFTA, giving money to farmers is beneficial, but you have to also make sure that the policy and tools are in place to take advantage of them."

Barlow says, this funding is not new money, as it has been known about for quite some time through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

The Partnership was announced  on July 21 of last year.
