Today is Canada's Agriculture Day!

A day where farmers, processors, and all people in the sector celebrate their pride in agriculture.

The day is also meant to create a closer relationship between consumers and people who produce their food.

Federal Ag Minister Launches Programs and Activities Today

As a part of Canada's Agriculture Day, Federal Agriculture Minister, Lawrence MacAulay, will launch Federal programs and activities under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

The Canadian Agricultural Partnership will be replacing Growing Forward 2 after it expires in March.

Warning Labels will be Devastating to Canadian Agriculture

Producers could take a hit when food warning labels appear in grocery stores.

Associate Ag Critic, John Barlow, says the Liberal government is going ahead with putting warning labels on products high in salt, sugar, and fat, even if they are all natural.

Items getting a warning label include cheese, yogurt, and meat products.

Barlow says, with the labels encouraging consumers to choose alternatives, producers will take a hit on their unsold products.

Health Canada Launches Consultations on Food Warning Labelling

Health Canada has opened consultation on the food labels mentioned above.

The public is invited to comment on the Government's proposal for mandatory front-of-package nutrition symbols for foods high in saturated fat, sugars and sodium.

The consultations will be available online until April 26th.

Results will be shared later this year.
